산의 높이는 262m이며 한양이 조선의 도읍으로 정해지면서 도성의 남쪽에 위치하는 산이라 남산이라 불렀다. 본래 이름은 목멱산인데, 목멱산이랑 옛말의 마뫼로 곧 남산이란 뜻이다. 또 인경산이라고도 불렀다.
남산 서쪽 계단으로 이어진 세개의 광장이 산허리를 타고 펼쳐져있다. 맨 아래에 있는 광장은 녹지 대 를포함하여 약 2,500평 규모의 어린이 놀이터, 그 위에는 약 6,000평 규모의 백범광장이 있고 위쪽 광장에는 남산 분수대를 중심으로 하여 그 북서쪽에 서울시 교육위원회 과학교육원이 있는데 서울시 교육위원회 과학교육원은 1970년 어린이회관으로 건립한 18층(시설면적 3,702평) 건물이다.

2. Namsan Tower-N Seoul Tower(남산타워)- sub. Line 4 hoehyeon-next to myeongdong st. The N tower is renowned as a national landmark, and for its cityscape. It sits on the Namsan mountain (243m or 797 ft) and attracts thousands of tourists and locals every year, especially during nighttime when the tower lights up. This is the best spot to enjoy the whole view of the city. Many visitors ride the Namsan Cable Car up the Mt. Namsan to walk to the tower. Each year, approximately 8.4 million visit the N Seoul Tower, attractions South Korea offers, including Namsan Park and Namsangol Hanok Village. In 2012, surveys conducted by Seoul City revealed foreign tourists ranked the N Seoul Tower as the number one tourist attraction. The N Seoul Tower is now also a symbol of Seoul.
